My name is Oliver and I am a member of Compass, a centre for Self-Directed Learning. I have been fortunate to have had the option of either homeschooling or going to school all my life. I’ve loved the freedom homeschooling offered me.
However, in Grade 7, I was interested to see what school was like, so I decided to try a year. The most important thing I learned in school was that I can thrive without it. I wanted to go back to having that freedom to learn and live in the way that works best for me. As the homeschool community where I live shrank down to only a couple of us, Compass became an essential part of my learning.
At Compass, I belong to a community of amazing people from both school and homeschool backgrounds. We take classes together, have in-depth conversations about life, and grow as human beings. Compass allows us teens to be fully responsible for our learning, which is a vital element of our education that school does not typically support.
The focus at Compass is aimed at exploring what success means to us. Success comes in different forms but many are not seen as viable options in a school context. I don’t think I want to be part of the 9-to-5 lifestyle, and in my experience it’s the same for lots of other kids; however, many are taught to think that it’s the only way to earn a living. Thanks to Compass, I have learned otherwise. For example, I have used the resources at Compass to fine-tune my resume so that even at age 16, I have been able to secure two summer jobs directly related to my passions.
Compass is a charity and it costs money to keep our doors open, lights on, and teachers paid. Not all kids who would benefit from Compass are fortunate enough to be able to afford the fees, and this is where you come in. I need your help to make Compass financially sustainable and available to all who want to access it. As we wrap up the year, will you make a donation to Compass to ensure it’s always here for those who need it?
For me, success is any path through life that makes you happy and is sustainable. Through Compass, I have been fortunate to be exposed to many ways of creating success in life. I take classes with teachers who are knowledgeable and passionate about their fields of expertise. I learn from people who create ways of pursuing their passion in a way that’s sustainable. And although I have not yet decided exactly what I want to do in life, Compass has helped me learn how I want to do it.
Thank you for being involved with Compass and for sharing my passion for the space and the opportunities it provides.
