Fees

Compass has something for everyone! Full-time Compass members have full access to our space, staff, workshops, and classes Sept. through June. This is Compass the way it was designed to be used. Your fee includes weekly mentoring (advising); assistance in finding internships, volunteer, and work opportunities; guidance and support in applying to post-secondary education; and much more.

Part-time & preteen membership is also available. This membership is valid for Fall/Term 1, and a similar product will become available for Winter/Term 2 and Spring/Term 3. It includes limited access to the Compass space, staff, and workshops up to three days/week for teens or four mornings/week for preteens. Classes, mentoring (advising), and tutoring may be added on a per-course basis. (These add-ons will be made available in September 2018.)

Option A. Full Time:

Full-time Compass members have full access to our space, staff, workshops, and classes all year. This is Compass the way it was designed to be used. Your fee includes:

  • Weekly mentoring (advising) with one of our core staff members or a favourite teacher to help you self-design your education. You can set and work towards academic, career, social, or emotional goals with support from your mentor;
  • Assistance in finding internships, volunteer, and work opportunities;
  • Guidance and support in applying to post-secondary education as a partial-schooler or homeschooler;
  • Access to Compass’s volunteer tutors and assistance finding other tutors;
  • The opportunity to take any or all of our classes;
  • Class materials and field trip fees (where applicable) included.

 

To help us make Compass accessible to everyone, please select the tier that best reflects your family’s budget when you register.

  • Tier 1: $10 000/year (this includes a $1000 tax-deductible donation)
  • Tier 2: $9000/year (true cost)
  • Tier 3: $8000/year (early-bird discount)

We offer families flexible payment arrangements including yearly, term, or monthly payments. However, if fees are not paid in full, post-dated cheques for the full fee must be sent to Compass by Sept. 13, 2018. Online payment can be made through Shopify (using a credit card or PayPal) on our registration page. Any payment returned due to insufficient funds is subject to a $30 administration fee.

  • Early Registration: Payment received before July 15, 2018 will receive a 10% discount.
  • A deposit of 10% is due on August 15, 2018, so that we are able to start planning.
  • Balance of payment is due on the first day of Term.
  • Late Fee: 10% Annual Percentage Rate (APR) interest charge.

Option B. Part Time or Pre-teen:

Membership:

Family membership includes access to the Compass space, staff and workshops up to three days/week for teens or four mornings/week for preteens. Bi-weekly Community Mentorship Meetings with our core staff are included. Classes, mentoring, and tutoring may be added on a per-class basis. All part-time fees cover one term (e.g., Term 1 runs September through December).

  • 1 child: $275/term
  • 2 children: $440/term
  • 3 or more children: $577.50/term

Donations: If your family is in a position to make a tax-deductible donation to offer subsidies to families in need, so that no family is turned away, please consider donating when you register.

  • Membership fees are due on August 15, 2018, so that we are able to start planning.
  • Early Registration: Payment received before July 15, 2018 will receive a 10% discount.
  • Materials fees will be included in course charges.
  • Some field trips would cost extra.
  • Late Fee: 10% APR interest charge.

Classes:

The base cost of our classes is approximately $10/hour, plus materials fees. Pre-teen classes are usually 1 hour, and teen classes 1.5 hours. A full list of classes with costs and times will be distributed to members and posted on our website by the beginning of each term. All members are encouraged to try out any or all of our classes during the first week of term.   

We offer quantity discounts for our classes, to make Compass more affordable for larger families:

  • up to 6 classes pay the full fee
  • 7-9 classes* receive a 5% discount
  • 10-12 classes* receive a 10% discount

*As part-time members, families may only purchase more than 6 classes if they are to be shared among siblings.                     

Class payments are due on the Monday of the second week of Term. There will be a late fee of 10%/month.

Tutoring:

Compass staff would be happy to assist members in finding tutors for specific subject areas. The cost of tutoring is $35/hour.

Mentoring:

Compass part-time members can purchase additional mentoring (advising). A core staff or favourite teacher will assist them in self-designing their education, setting and working towards academic, career, social, and emotional goals. The cost of mentoring is $425/term.

Option C. Classes Only:

Compass seeks to remain accessible to all families. If you are a full-time secondary school student looking to supplement your education with our “after-school” classes, or a part-time student or homeschooler who would like to try out classes without committing to a membership, please speak to us. To see whether Compass is a good fit for you, we offer the option of taking up to two classes per week during your first term with us. After that, we ask that you purchase a full- or part-time membership.  

Scholarships and Fee Subsidies:

Compass is committed to ensuring that no family is turned away due to lack of funds. When possible, we offer scholarships and subsidies based upon your needs, financial capabilities, and an agreement that is acceptable to both you and Compass. Refunds:

  • 100% until Aug. 15, 2018 for full-time members or 3 weeks before the start of each term for part-time members.
  • 50% until the end of the first week of each term.
  • There are no refunds after the first week of the term unless there are exceptional circumstances, and the refund is approved by our Board of Directors.

All requests for refunds must be submitted to Compass in writing by email or mail. All refunds are subject to a $30 processing fee. No refunds are issued if a member is asked to leave for behavioural reasons (see our Community Agreement).
